Opinion: Shun the Xbox alligator and write about literally anything else
I'm not angry, just disappointed.
"It is difficult to draw a clear boundary between what is acceptable and unacceptable."
Immensely popular modding platform Nexus Mods has clarified its stance on generative AI content after seeing the subject debated extensively among its community.
In a lengthy blog post, Nexus CEO Victor Folmann said some mod authors have raised valid concerns about the use of generative AI—including those afraid of seeing their work reused without permission and others who only want to engage with human-made content—but noted he will not be introducing an outright ban on AI-generated mods.
Anticipating some pushback, Folmann claimed a blanket ban would be impossible to enforce and actively encourage users to hide, rather than disclose, their use of generative AI.
"AI is currently used throughout the whole process of creation, from script autocompletion to generation of textures, voices, and full assets, and it is difficult to draw a clear boundary between what is acceptable and unacceptable," he wrote.
"An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use. We'd prefer the opposite; it should be out in the open, clearly labelled, and regulated according to the rules that we can implement on our platform."
Notably, he said Nexus Mods is "pro-human creativity" while adding that AI-generated mods are "welcome" on the platform providing they meet certain criteria regarding permissions, transparency, presentation, and conduct.
