PlayStation 5 sales are in decline six years after launch, but the console is closing in on 100 million lifetime sales.

As noted in Sony's fiscal report for the second quarter of the current fiscal year (Q2 FY26), PlayStation 5 unit sales declined year-on-year to 2.6 million (down from 4 million units). To date, the console has sold 97.9 million units worldwide.

Sony said that downturn is indicative of a console nearing the end of its lifecycle.

"Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected in this stage of the console life cycle, the PS platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner," said the company.

"Looking ahead to next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service. We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next generation platform."
