AQAU-CWA members voted to authorise strike action last week as they attempt to secure a first union contract.
The German co-development studio said it must adapt to changing project requirements and client needs.
Embracer subsidiary Fishlabs is cutting an undisclosed number of jobs across its development and support teams. The German co-development studio said it has been forced to downsize due to shifting project requirements.
"These decisions are never made lightly. Changing project requirements and the needs of our clients and internal teams have led us to reassess our structure, unfortunately resulting in some talented colleagues leaving the studio," it wrote in a post on Linkedin.
"[...] Fishlabs remains committed to its partner projects and our teams moving forward. For today, however, our priority is supporting the colleagues and friends who are leaving us."
The Hamburg studio has supported the development of notable titles such as Dead Island 2: Ultimate Edition, Teardown, and Albion Online.
Fishlabs is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Austrian publisher Plaion, which itself is a part of Embracer Group.
Plaion and Fishlabs are currently housed within Fellowship Entertainment, one of multiple publicly-listed companies spun off by Embracer.
The Swedish conglomerate has spent recent years putting the finishing touches on a business restructure that was approved following a debilitating era of layoffs, studio closures, divestments, and project cancellations across its various subsidiaries.
The move will see Embracer preside over four standalone segments: Fellowship Entertainment, Coffee Stain & Friends, Asmodee, and Embracer.
Fellowship Entertainment is being positioned as an "IP-led entertainment company" focused on game development, publishing, and licensing. The spinoff will house major studios including 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Dark Horse Media, Eidos-Montréal, Fishlabs, Flying Wild Hog Studios, Gunfire Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Redoctane Games and Warhorse Studios.
That means franchises such as Darksiders, Dead Island, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Metro, Remnant, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Tomb Raider, and others now reside within Fellowship.
